Functional Skills English aims to develop your current literacy skills to help you to succeed in everyday work and social situations, as well as to qualify for further study. You will cover communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The awarding body for the course is City & Guilds. The course covers strategies for reading, spelling and other aspects of writing, including punctuation and producing different types of text such as letters and instructions. The course will also develop your confidence in speaking and listening, with task-based activities which allow you to practise these in everyday scenarios. You will work individually, in pairs and small Groups, and as a whole class, and your progress will be regularly reviewed by your tutor. In addition to the time in class, you will need to do around three hours of directed study per week in your own time.

Before you enrol you will complete a short skills check to make sure you are matched onto the right level of course. This will also help you identify which skills you need to improve, to have clear goals, and to be able to work independently with the resources provided.
Our aim is to create a welcoming and purposeful environment where students feel free to learn. The course will focus on reading, technical writing skills and planning and creating a range of personal and work documents such as letters, blogs and forum posts. The course will also develop confidence in your speaking and listening skills. The speaking and listening tasks focus on effective communication in discussion groups and individual work. In addition to class time, you will complete around 3 hours of independent study per week. On completion learners will be able will have a better understanding of how English is used in everyday life.
Please bring a pen, A4 lined paper and an A4 ring binder to the first session.
Courses are externally assessed by: • 1 hour 10 min reading task paper • 1 hour 20 min writing task paper • two short speaking and listening tasks in class
On successful completion of the course you will achieve a Functional Skills qualification in English at Level 2. You may then progress to a GCSE in English or to other further education courses. You should also be able to access a range of jobs and careers
